Colonial Times
Literacy- This week our classroom tables were transformed into covered wagons as we traveled back in time to the 1700's to learn about Colonial times. The students learned that a trip to town was a big planned out event in the 1700's. Families went to town to trade and buy things from different tradespeople such as the miller, baker, cobbler, blacksmith, hatmaker, tailor, dressmaker, and more. Most of what people needed they made on their farm, but sometimes went to town to get it from someone that specialized in the trade.
Colonial Town Square- We are bringing the students learning to life next Wednesday, April 24th from 1-2:00 in the Forest View Gym. Students will get to see demonstrations and exhibits from a colonial town baker, blacksmith, dressmaker, carpenter, spinner, weaver, farmer, and more. Please let me know if you would like to attend with your child.
Skills- In skills we learned the rule to double the consonants l, f, s, and z. We also learned the tricky words: funny, was, and all. The kids are putting everything that they have learned all year and reading stories independantly, in small, and in big groups. It is important to get books in students hands and have them practice to build up their confidence and stamina as readers. The kids should all be very proud of the progress that they have made. The kids are excited to be readers and to share this new skill. Some readers are still sounding out words and that is ok.
Math- In math we starting a new unit called Word Problems. The big idea in this unit is for students to be able to combine sets using objects, fingers, and number paths. Students will also solve addition word problems. This is a direct extention to our last unit. Addition is a major milestone in our student's mathematical foundation. So, we want want to make sure students are given plenty of time to practice and apply the skill of addition. This week the students were introduced to the symbols + and =. The students aDuring this unit students will be introduced to the symbols (+ and =). The students are learning that there are multiple ways to solve an addition problem using different strategies.
Reading Buddy fun- Today we met with our third grade reading buddies for some Easter Peep fun! The students worked with their reading buddy to make catapults to see how far they could launch their peep. The kids worked together to create, test, and revamp their catapults.
