Welcome Back!

Although the last two weeks have been short, the kids seem refreshed and so happy to see each other. They have done great getting back into our school routine.

We started learning about Native Americans in literacy. We are comparing where they live, what their home looks like, the clothes they wear and the food they eat to our own. This week we focused on the Lakota Sioux tribe. We found out that the Lakota Sioux tribe hunted buffalo and used them for almost everything they needed to live (tipis, clothing, food, moccasins, arrow heads, bows, and so much more). The kids are very interested in this topic. One student said "This is the best thing we have learned in Kindergarten so far!" We were also very excited to have a student bring in pictures of Native American homes, arrow heads, and an Indian hammer. It helped the students make a connection to what we were learning.

In Skills we are practicing using the sounds we have learned so far to read and write. Please keep in mind that it is ok for students to be sounding out words as they read. Please have students continue to practice the tricky words at home. Students know that tricky words are words that do not follow the rules and should be learned. The tricky words that we have learned so far are: red, blue, yellow, one, two, three, the, look, a. The more students practice these words the more fluent they will become when they read. Each student is working incredibily hard and should be proud of the progress they have made.

In math we are continuing to learn about teen numbers. We have learned the numbers 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15. We are learning that these numbers have a group of ten and some extras. The kids practiced circling a group of ten cubes using a string and putting their extras next to the group. This allowed the kids to easily see how many "in all" instead of counting each cube individually. We also learned how to use a rekenrek (pictured to the left). Rekenrek's are a math tool that help us to easily see teen numbers. We practiced showing ten on top and some extra's on the bottom.
