Plants

This week in literacy we wrapped up our unit on plants. We learned about another extraodinary person that did amazing things in his life- George Washington Carver. We created dicidous trees and Christmas evergreen trees. Next week we will begin learning about farms.

Our literacy program builds on itself to provide students with the necessary background knowledge for what they will be learning about. We learned about our senses before we learned about plants, we learned about plants before we are learning about farms, and we will learn about farms before learning about Native Americans. Our literacy program continues this way through elementary. The kids love learning, exploring, and sharing in literacy. Make sure to ask your child each night what they learned about.

In skills we learned the tricky word "the". We practiced writing the word and reading it. We underline the word to let students know that it is a word that does not follow the rules.

In math we are working on comparing and ordering objects according to their measurable

attributes. We learned to compare objects according to their size: big, small, same- 1by length: long, longer, short, shorter, and same- and by height- tall, short, same. We are also beginning to learn about teen numbers. To build kids knowledge of teen numbers they are first taught to see a group of ten and some more. When we count objects we first count ten to get a group and then count- ten 1, ten 2, ten 3, ten 4... we call this the math way of counting. The students are also seeing teen numbers with ten frames one full ten frame and some more. The kids also state the regular way - 14.

We love the time that we get to spend with our third grade reading buddies. This month we are reading the book "The Gingerbread Man", creating a trap to catch the Gingerbread man, and building gingerbread houses. I will be sending a note home this week of supplies we will need the week before Christmas to make the gingerbread houses.

Hayden is this weeks Star Student. She is a hard worker and helps others when they need it. Great job, kiddo!
