Johnny Appleseed

The kids were re-energized after their day off yesterday. We have had a lot of fun learning about plants in literacy. We started the week learning about bees and the process of pollination. The kids LOVED it! We used juice as nector and cheetos as pollen. The kids drank the nector and rubbed their fingers on the pollen (cheetos) and flew to another flower to pollinate it. The kids couldn't believe how much pollen their flower had when we were finished. We ended the week by reading about Johnny Appleseed and making applesauce. This class of kids can really cook! Their applesauce was delicious. In your child's folder is the recipe we used in case you want to make it with them at home:)

In skills we learned the sounds f, v, z, and p this week. We are using all of our sounds to blend and make new words. The kids are also learning to say a word, segment it or say each sound, and write the sounds they hear. The kids are so excited about their progress and are loving all that they can do!

This week in writing we learned about labels. The students are using the sounds that they have learned to label their illustrations and different parts of our classroom using post-it notes.

In math we are focusing on comparing numbers using mathematical vocabulary. We have learned the following vocabulary: greater than, less than, and same. This week the students worked on showing more and less using two groups and then telling how many more and how many less.

We read the story "Jack and the Beanstalk" with our reading buddies last week. Our challenge this week to go along with the story was to see who could create the tallest beanstalk using playdough and spaghetti. The kids love working with their reading buddies to brainstorm and create. Take a look at some of their creations:

Tucker is this weeks Star Student. He is a kind friend that works very hard. Awesome job, buddy!

We are continuing to collect non parishable food until next Wednesday for Project Christmas. The kids are being challanged to line the hallways with the food that we have collected. Project Christmas will accept any non parishable food, but is especially in need of peanut butter and canned fruit. We have a collection tub in our class. So far we have collected fifteen cans.

Important Dates to Remember:

November 18- Happy Birthday Autumn

November 22 & 23- No School- Thanksgiving Break

November 26- Late Start

December 10- Christmas Music Concert

Please continue to collect box tops for our classroom. Our class gets to keep half of the money earned to buy supplies that we are in need of. The other half is used to help fund school activities.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend!
