Stories Galore

We finished up our literacy unit on Five Senses by reading biographies about Ray Charles and Helen Keller. The students learned why these two people were remarkable and thought of someone that they know that they think is also remarkable.

We are now reading stories and focusing on retelling. We read the stories "Chicken Little", "The Three Little Pigs", and "The 3 Billy Goats Gruff" this week. The kids should have brought home retelling pieces from each story. Ask them to retell you the stories using their retelling pieces.

This week we started learning letter sounds (a, m, t, and d). The kids practiced writing each sound, sorted objects that begin with each sound, and arranged the sounds to blend and make words (at, mat, mad, am, ad, dad)! The kids are so excited to be reading!! You would be so proud of how hard they are working. Please keep in mind that we do not call the letters by their name, instead we refer to them as their sound. If your child calls the letter by its name it is ok.

In math we are working on writing, recognizing, and counting to 10. This week discussed different ways that we can represent the numbers 6, 7, and 8. The kids thought of different ways that we can represent each number. They came up with a tens frame, with fingers, with a domino, with a picture, and with tally marks. The kids are really showing a lot of improvement with writing their numbers. Please continue to practice recognizing the numbers at home.

Ellie is this weeks Star Student. She is a kind friend to her peers. Great job Ellie!

Last year, we had our first Halloween walk on the nature trail. It was so much fun that we are doing it again this year. Our PTO is awesome and works hard to decorate the trail to make it a festive walk for the kids. Each grade is responsible for some of the snack. Kindergarten is asked to bring the individualized carmel to dip apples in. Thank you to those that brought it in already.
